Story Behind the Painting
The Dead Rabbit was originally created for “The Dead Rabbit Bar” in New York; a multi-award-winning Irish bar, set up by Belfast men Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry in 2013. It was commissioned to mark the bar’s fifth anniversary. The Rabbit character is inspired by John Morrissey, historical leader of the Dead Rabbits gang, an Irish American criminal street gang active in Lower Manhattan in the 1830s to 1850s.
The rabbit is painted to portray a disturbed character, cigarette in mouth and sporting bandages from a recent fight. It represents a journeyman who has been there and done that, not someone to mess with. It is emblazoned with symbolic elements, some of Ireland, with a shamrock and Guinness pint and trademarks of Terry’s work such as the words 'Hope', 'Honour', 'Trust' and 'Justice' and the docker and baby doll painted in the rabbit’s ears.
Viewers should keep coming back to the image because they always find something new in it, maybe something they didn’t see before or something they interpret differently on different viewings. The artwork marries oil and acrylic paints, charcoal, graphite, as well as colouring and drawing pens to create a haunting, multi-layered effect.
It now hangs prominently behind the point station on the bar's second floor and is intended to signify the beginning of the Rabbit’s transformation from a cartoon character to one in real life.
