Story Behind the Painting
‘Built to Endure’ is a powerful tribute to the strength and resilience of Belfast’s working-class men - the men we grew up with, our fathers, brothers, uncles, and sons. If you were lucky, like Terry, you had a father or a man in your life you could admire and look up to.
Terry Bradley’s striking portrait of a stern-faced man in a flat cap captures the grit, pride, and toughness that define the men of Belfast, who would do anything for their families and their principles. They might have been flawed, and many gave up their dreams for us, but they loved us deeply and never gave up.
This man’s face, lined with hardship and determination, looks directly at the viewer with an unflinching stare. He knows what it takes to walk his own path in a troubled world.
In the background, another figure lingers in the shadows - perhaps a symbol of the country’s past or a reminder of those who came before. Bradley’s bold, geometric strokes and vibrant colours reflect the fractured beauty of the men of Belfast - and of Belfast itself - a city scarred by conflict but alive with colour, spirit, and creativity.
This piece honours the dockers, the builders, and the everyday characters who held the city together through difficult times. With ‘Built to Endure’, Bradley not only paints a portrait, but he also captures the soul of the men of Belfast, and of our fathers.
