Story Behind the Painting
This painting is from a series that Terry painted on hardboard during the last part of lockdown. He had limited resources as his normal canvas maker had stopped supplying him due to restrictions in imports.
The word ‘Enough’ embodies a whole range of emotions from this time. The most obvious is that Terry had had enough of lockdown and all that it brought for many who struggle with their mental health. Terry, like many, found the lockdown very hard. His normal forms of escapism like driving and riding his motorbike were restricted and he found being confined to one place with all his family to be very challenging.
By nature, Terry is a solitary person and being trapped, as he felt it, was emotionally tough. Like so many others, he lost his mother during the lockdown and was unable to go and visit her in the care home or give her a final hug goodbye. The funeral was further restricted with Terry and his immediate family standing outside the church while a minister conducted a brief service, her exposed coffin in the pouring rain.
Although in the broader sense ‘Enough’ relates to Covid-19 and the worldwide pandemic, it is also a very personal piece and speaks of Terry's own feelings of being overwhelmed and wanting to say that he’d had enough. The muted tones and the tear-stained face are yet again a self-portrait. There are no tattoos or birds, just a single word written clearly along the bottom as a statement of fact - ENOUGH.
