Story Behind the Painting

'The Men' reimagines one of Terry Bradley's most enduring subjects — the Belfast dockers of Harland & Wolff — on a much larger scale. The painting depicts a colourful procession of fifteen men leaving the shipyard at the end of their shift, plumes of smoke rising on either side of them as they walk. Each figure wears a different coloured overcoat — deep greens, dark oranges, and dusky blues — creating a striking, almost rhythmic wall of colour against the industrial backdrop.

The Men captures the scale and unity of the shipyard workforce as a whole — men bound together by trust, hardship, and a shared way of life, walking home through the smoke of the yard they helped build. The deliberately worn, faded edge along the bottom of the painting echoes the passage of time, giving the piece the feel of a weathered relic from Belfast's industrial past — even though it's a wholly original, reimagined scene.

It's a tribute not just to one man, but to the thousands who walked the same path home, day after day, through the smoke and noise of one of the world's greatest shipyards.
