Story Behind the Painting

Terry has long felt that his motorbike plays a huge role in his life and dealing with his mental health. As a child growing up in North Belfast there were few opportunities to pursue hobbies or sport as he was often kept at home and away from the trouble on the streets outside his front door. Drawing became his main form of escapism. The other notable interest that he developed at an early age was a love for motorbikes that his father passed on to him.

Frank Bradley somehow managed to get hold of an old, more than second-hand, motorbike and took it, along with a very young Terry, up to Nutt’s Corner when it was still an abandoned airfield. There he taught his son to ride the bike and those early memories of shared times with his father have shaped Terry ever since. As the youngest of four, Terry sometimes felt he had a more distant relationship with his father and although his brothers were also brought up riding motorbikes it was this bond that meant the most to Terry.

Today, Terry spends as much time as he can on his bike. He finds it not only comforts him with its associations with his past, but it also importantly gives him purpose and calmness, a strong motive to control his anxiety.

Terry feels that it is important to keep moving ahead of is anxiety and nerves, he feels that like him, many men particularly find it hard to articulate their feelings and need a shared topic or activity to bring them together. The image of the ‘Never Give Up’ biker combines this image of a man who is overcoming his own obstacles and seeking solace in action. Terry feels that it is important for anyone struggling with anxiety and depression to keep busy and moving forward. For him this mostly involves painting and drawing but when he can he also uses getting out on the bike as a form of relaxation. He finds the combination of movement and concentration helps him to ‘Never Give Up’.
